When Guillermo del Toroโs does steampunk.
Presentation:
Although Guillermo del Toro is most associated with Panโs Labyrinth, I think this film is what English audiences know him for. This comic book style hero really benefits from del Toroโs dark supernatural style and I think looks incredible. This is the best version of Hellboy because of its art direction, cast and story. Ron Perlman is perfect for this role and the world building is gothically art deco yet also steampunk sci-fi. Itโs also interesting that his future film Shape of Water recycles Abe Sapienโs fish costume from here. I really enjoyed the chemistry between Hellboy and Liz Sherman as well, itโs quite hard to find a balance like that.
Conclusion:
If this doesnโt make you a fan of Guillermo del Toro, nothing should. This is his most mainstream action film that gets a lot of criticism, but I think is a ton of fun if you donโt take it seriously. Come on, itโs a demon fighting Nazis, movies should be appreciated on a grade. Time to lighten up!
