Presentation:
Kubrick takes on one of Stephen Kings best stories with spiraling character development in another psychological dive into madness. This time with horror elements, that will be a great entry into the genre. Jack Nicholson's future villainous image is defined by this role and Shelley Duvall also shows true trauma through unethical method directing from the master. The framing is once again impeccable with deep symbolism and motifs. Sets are spectacular in a film that looks amazing even by today's standards.
Conclusion:
The story is well executed given such sparse dialogue, Kubrick never holds your hand consistently providing an engaging air of mystery which you'll still find rewarding even once the credits roll. Lots to discuss afterwards, arguably not tainted by future sequels like Doctor Sleep. Considering this is a horror film, it allows more leniency for a lighter script, still expertly navigated.
