Kin-dza-dza! (1986)

Koo ku Soviet surrealism.

Summary:

This may be the weirdest Soviet sci-fi cult classic ever made, if the title didnโ€™t make that obvious. The film reminds me a lot of Terry Gilliamโ€™s dystopian Brazil but in a Dune sci-fi setting. I checked this film out for itโ€™s experimental production design, but this is one of those obscure experimental films that only cinephiles should love for its cinematic novelty. I think you can look at these stills and get your fix all the same. The sets are interesting but thereโ€™s a lot of buddy comedy shenanigans, which felt inappropriately commercial. Humor is subjective, and I simply didnโ€™t get the social commentary, references, or jokes. Thereโ€™s just too many cultural and generational barriers for me, but I can see this being a beloved cult favorite especially for Russians.
