Panโs Labyrinth (2006)
The iconic gothic nightmare.
Presentation:
This is a very significant Spanish film of a generation, influencing many films to come. In the early 2000s, many films had a dark contrasty style, but this dark fantasy was on another level. Like many of Guillermoโs films, there is often some context of war and it is the same here. The plot itself is a bit more of a fairy tale than something based in reality, which was not particularly revolutionary compared to the imagery. I would describe it as somewhat like Alice in Wonderland descending into madness, but with quality over quantity. The supernatural elements are memorable and well done but the majority of the film is still based on the war plot.
Conclusion:
A very influential film for its time but a bit lackluster in 2024. It will likely feel slow for many people especially as it was not particularly made with western audiences in mind. Still, a wholly original vision with violence, realism and fantasy all blended together for a dark dream that many should enjoy. An avant garde art project that is overrated when you consider the execution of the main story.
