Be careful who you wish forโ€ฆ

Presentation:

If you watched Curry Barkerโ€™s YouTube film Milk & Serial, Obsession has a lot similarities except with upgraded lighting and cameras. Itโ€™s shot in a modern open gate 3:2 aspect ratio and shallow depth of field to further emphasize that this is a contemporary film. The actors in this film have relatable auras and dialogue that should appeal to Gen Z audiences. Inde stands out, but a lot of the castโ€™s performances revolve around awkward pausing and stupid choices. But itโ€™s ultimately an indie popcorn horror so you shouldnโ€™t expect much in the writing department. That doesnโ€™t mean it looks like a budget film, but there are forced plot developments only forgiven because they are naive teenagers. Despite tackling on the typical cursed monkey paw trope, this still feels like a very refreshing way of telling horror stories.

Conclusion:

This indie film has already become one of the most profitable films in history with a budget of less than a million yet over 400 million in revenue. The reasoning being this film has spread word of mouth for how scary it is, with its virality assisted by targeting young Gen Z moviegoers. If youโ€™ve already been down the rabbit hole of creepypasta YouTube horror, you can see a lot of the analog found footage horror influences on Barker. With films like Backrooms, Skinamarink, and V/H/S gaining in popularity, itโ€™s likely weโ€™ll see more revitalization in this style of late 2000s Aughtubebased filmmaking. I donโ€™t think it was that scary, but it was a blast and surely a lot of fun to watch with friends. This should already be considered a future cult classic. Awkwardly scary or scarily awkward, Iโ€™m all for this contemporary creepypasta cinema!
