Hereditary (2018)
Why A24 makes the best modern horror.
Presentation:
The cinematography, angles, camera movement and soundtrack all come together for one of the freshest looking horror films. Characters are eerie and realistically creepy. Some shots will leave you speechless with your jaw dropped with bone chilling scares that are pure fun. The story follows a troubled family with a dark past that rapidly reaches a satisfying climax. At the heart of the film, you would expect the film to linger on some of the themes of parenting but the film never shoves it down your throat nor forgets its role in entertaining you. What's wild is you actually begin to form an emotional connection to the characters right before all shit hits the fan, which a typical horror film has no right to do. It's impressive how well the drama between the mother and son are portrayed for a horror, making you invest in their wellbeing. This film engrosses you with a provocatively chaotic score from the uniquely talented Colin Stetson making it one of the more cinematic A24 experiences.
Conclusion:
This could be a flagship title from A24, the gateway for the studio and entry into your horror journey if you find yourself normally too squeamish. The ending has one of the greatest spectacles of any horror film in recent memory leaving you wanting more. The best film from Ari Aster, and perhaps the best performances from the lead characters’ work so far. I demand a sequel, Aster!
