Last student standing wins.

Presentation:

Notably one of Quentin Tarantinoโ€™s favorite films, you can definitely see why. Gratuitous violence, dramatic character introductions and a totally obscene dynamics. But this film is actually a pretty good action thriller in 2025 for what is basically a live action anime. You can really see the DNA of Japanese anime writing in this film and itโ€™s one of the situations where it works because of the sheer number of characters. Guns blazing, these teens are basically just cannon fodder to get brutally murdered by each other for our entertainment. Itโ€™s fun and works well because of the sheer novelty of the concept. As there are more than 40 students in this death match, the film can only go over so many characters without us being overwhelmed. Luckily the core groups are distinct from each other and mostly memorable. The action is fine, acting is typical for a Japanese popcorn flick, I just felt some of the kills could have been more inspired like something out of Final Destination, after all this is essentially uses a teenager slasher formula.

Conclusion:

If youโ€™ve ever played Fortnite or PUGB Underground, this is where the concept originated. Battle Royale would go on to lay the foundation for so many other last one standing battle to the death films. However, most will not know that it originated from this Japanese icon. Although today the concept has been saturated with abundant guilty pleasures, this one is still worth a watch. Itโ€™s actually a lot of fun and some of the character introductions are awesome and badass. Just donโ€™t expect any Fortnite dances. Winner winner chicken dinner!
