Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983)

What is honor in war?

Presentation:

Itโ€™s hard to say what makes this nostalgic war film so popular. Is it the multiculturalism, cast, or music? Though I prefer the piano/orchestra version, Ryuichi Sakamoto creates an iconic soundtrack that adds a certain mysticism that further establishes the cultural differences between Japan and the West. Whatโ€™s even more fascinating is Sakamoto himself plays a major role in this film. David Bowie is magnetic as well as the other Japanese cast playing opposite of him, even despite their completely broken English. Although difficult to understand without subtitles, I believe it enhances the atmosphere.

Conclusion:

This film has a special magic that is rare even from other nostalgic hits, likely due to David Bowie and Sakamoto. Itโ€™s a strange film in that the themes and message are serious, but the tone has a hopeful lightness from the dialogue and music. Yet it all comes together despite the ideas being at odds with each other. A special film and if you subscribe to Bowieโ€™s enigmatic presence, this reinforces why.
