When Evil Lurks (2023)

Evil so sinister youโ€™ll think itโ€™s real.

Presentation:

The Spanish film has beautiful Zeiss-like visuals with a very unsettling and uncanny grade. It's too oversaturated adding to the uncomfortable atmosphere. This still has indie film festival vibes but it's an impressive one due to the novel premise. Still, this film stands out as one of the darkest and most bleak films I can think of. For that reason alone you should pay attention to this film.

Story:

The premise is very novel, though has some elements of Bird Box. Chaos ensues due to man's stupidity in properly handling a possessed body. The lore and world building are fun and i could see franchise potential. There is quite a few disturbing imagery and some a bit overdone. Regarding acting, it was very frustrating as nearly everyone is incompetent and for no reason, never listen to the only person that can save them. I really hate these types of films and make me appreciate Peele characters more. It's just annoying and unsatisfying when a story is propelled by characterโ€™s negligence. If characters act like this, then yes, they deserve this ending, but we donโ€™t.

Conclusion:

A bleak, gorey film with a unique take on the possession genre. Itโ€™s actually quite disturbing at times by how consistently present the evil is in this film, pouring out of every crevice of the filmโ€™s design. But if youโ€™re not paralyzed by terror and can focus on the characters and story, frustrating experiences lurk ahead.
