V For Vendetta (2005)
Resisting fascism in style.
Presentation:
Abundant style, gratuitous violence reminiscent of The Matrix, and beautiful cinematography provide an awesome comic book style story of the dangers of big government. Kind of like 1984 where we see British government with too much control, you have an eloquent, perhaps pretentious dialogue from a masked vigilante taking on the establishment. Natalie Portman is an excellent emotional anchor to this story.
Conclusion:
There are some aspects of this story that may even see relevant today, particularly the healthcare corruption in the west. I think the film speaks to the dark corners of the mind that some of the more conspiratory mindsets will find extremely appealing. The target audience is very clear, attempting to provide a Tarantino catharsis of a sole warrior saving society. But the film contrarily takes itself very seriously which may be seen as a fault, with a somewhat unbelievable ending. I think the whole premise is over romanticized especially the emotional background of V and his motivations, which i suppose you'll have to just agree justifies his rampage. I think the film would be better more interesting if it didnโt spoon feed its one sided politics. But it will undoubtedly very satisfying for those that want ammunition against fascism, government, corporations, but maybe a bit too over the top and convenient. There is a cult following for this film, and will definitely inspire, but on second viewing you may find it all a bit over dramatic when the magical illusion fades. I personally enjoyed this film.
