How easy it is to conform to political assassination.

Presentation:

The film that put Bertolucci into the spotlight, itโ€™s quite clear that this political drama shows the makings of a great filmmaker. Italian blood surges through this film in seductive yet playful style, a hallmark of Bertolucci. Although I needed a refresher about Italyโ€™s fascist police, the political elements in this film are actually quite easy to follow. What was not easy to understand at first are the many flashbacks, which I found not to be particularly clear. Bertolucci films at a distance, which gives us that objective framing, but I found myself confused by the perspective of the story while it was bouncing around. It will take a bit of attention to follow, but it is well worth it. Toward the second half the cinematography and story get progressively more steamy.

Analysis:

What I love about this film is how quietly it conveys Marcello's emotions. The trauma from childhood, the guilt, the weak will, the cowardice, the shame. All telegraphed so succinctly by the lack of emotion from betraying your screaming lover. Then blaming Italo for everything, absolutely genius storytelling. Such a well thought out character. With how relationship based Italy's culture is, Bertolucci almost makes it perfectly understandable how inevitable it was to conform to fascism.

Conclusion:

Though this is one of the more obscure films, you should be able to recognize early brilliance from the auteur. Sexy, intellectual, stylish, no wonder Bertolucci is a hit in the independent cinephile community. The visual direction of this film may even be more polished than his future films like The Last Emperor. But it is ultimately the story that will be the greatest takeaway from this impressionable experience.
