2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Before we were even born Kubrick was dreaming beyond the stars. Another masterpiece from the GOAT, providing the definitive visual language of outer space. 2001: A Space Odyssey is proving to be timeless for its psychological relationship with AI but also with grander themes, questioning humanity amongst the infinity of the stars. This looks unbelievable for a film made in 1968, influencing every future space film to come. Part of what makes it timeless are the real practical sets and design.
Conclusion:
Kubrick is my GOAT, but well deserved considering how early his films were made and how relevant they still are today. The pacing and execution are better than so many modern films today, though some might consider the vast droning sequences to be monotonous. I think there might be a thirty minute soundtrack montage just to set the tone. 2001: A Space Odyssey is Kubrick's most ambitious work and most far reaching, making this one of his most important films. It’s not as existential as it could be, but one can appreciate how much it leaves to the imagination. This is space, this is Kubrick.
