Amélie (2001)
The fondest love we all remember.
Presentation:
Why I normally don't rate romance movies very highly is because love is subjective. For me, a romance movie is supposed to make you want to fall in love, or I'd consider it more of a drama. It's supposed to make you feel alive and want to meet a tall dark stranger or quirky bookworm and this film does that. But romances today are all so realistic they drain the magic out of love. That's why Amelie is one of my favorite romance films. Audrey Tautou is so personable and you cheer for her every step of the way. You'll not only want to fall in love, you'll want to do good, cherish it and spread it to everything because of this whimsical fantasy. The French really know how to personify love.
Conclusion:
I love every aspect of this film. The relationship dynamic, the star crossing, the realism, the juxtaposition, the chase, hesitation, ups and downs. A perfect balance of innocence, the naivety of love, all its nuances and the reality of expectations. Hopefully this will illuminate why I don't like some of the other critically acclaimed romances.
