Amélie (2001)
French love hits differently!
Presentation:
I normally don't rate romance movies highly because my ideation of love is more hopeless romatic. For me, a romance movie is supposed to make you want to fall in love, othewise I'd consider it more of a drama. It should make you feel alive and want to meet a tall dark stranger or quirky bookworm and this film does all that. But romances today are all so realistic they drain the magic out of love. That's why Amelie is one of my favorite romance films. Audrey Tautou is so personable and you cheer for her every step of her naivety. You'll not only want to fall in love, you'll want to do good, cherish it and spread it to everything because of this whimsical fantasy. The French really know how to personify romance and all of its shy idiosyncracies.
Conclusion:
I love every aspect of this film. The relationship dynamic, the star crossing, the realism, the juxtaposition, the chase, hesitation, ups and downs. A perfect balance of innocence, the naivety of love, all its nuances and the reality of expectations. This is one of the best romance films of all time, the magic of love should never be forgotten.
