How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Everyone has a favorite Christmas movie.

Presentation:

I don’t think there are logical reasons for someone’s favorite holiday film. Sometimes it just comes down to which DVD or VHS was available at Christmas time to be replayed year after year. We didn’t have A Christmas Story or It’s a Wonderful Life, we had How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This is a wonderfully imaginative film with Gilliamesque set design and cinematography. I think Jim Carey is one of the greatest actors of all time because there’s no one that can pull off the physicality and quirkiness that the Grinch demands. He’s basically a live action cartoon, bringing the original animation to life. The musical numbers are memorable, the antics fun as hell, and I still found this hilarious in 2026 watching for the dozenth time. I could probably memorize the lines of this family Christmas movie if it was played on mute.

Conclusion:

I have no idea why anyone would dislike this film…is it because they prefer the original animation? All I feel is the magic from Ron Howard speaking to me and bringing nostalgic memories from my childhood. There’s a cult following building for this film, but it’s hard to imagine how any sequel could top this Dr. Seuss masterpiece!
