Mary and Max (2009)
The best friendships are glued together.
Presentation:
If you like the gothic stop motion of Coraline, you should equally love Mary and Max. Both animations are beautiful with high quality lighting and cinematography but this one differs in subject matter and structure. This film is 90% narrated and presented more like a cartoon, shifting between the different perspectives of our protagonists. Although I never grew tired of the jokes, it does begin to feel like constant Family Guy bits rather than progression of the story. This is more adult animation with themes on depression and loneliness that should speak to outcasts, which I found charming. I also found the black and white visuals to be artistically pleasing.
Conclusion:
I never felt bored watching these weird pen pals grow together despite being worlds apart. Even if you donโt relate to it, itโs hard not fall in love with this imperfect duo.
