Taxi Driver (1976)

Presentation:
One of Martin Scorsese’s early films with tremendous impact highlighting the decay of society. New York looks harsh and gritty like a modern Safdie’s film with an iconic performance from Robert De Niro. Even despite his instability and misguided conclusion, he still mostly manages to garner empathy despite being a loner that would be looked down upon today. Ultimately the film hinges on De Niro right coming right after his performance in The Godfather, and you can rest easy that he equally conveys the psychological and nuanced complexity through extensive silence.
Conclusion:
A fantastic film for 1976, which might not translate as well today. You might find the sleazy depictions in the film quite tame compared to the even more immoral society today. And so, his actions have a less subversive effect despite still representing relatable disenfranchisement. But if you find enough things in common with De Niro’s character, this could still be a compelling experience because Scorsese filmmaking still has all the polished characteristics of his other films. Acting with eyes, performance and a morally neutral presentation are the core of what makes Scorsese a masterful storyteller.
