Belladonna of Sadness (1973)
Psychedelic sadness drips in watercolor and sex.
Summary:
Before modern anime, Japan experimented with avant-garde water colors in the 70s. The abstract surrealism firmly places this into art film category, but the technique was underwhelming. Some of the animations are just static pans and zooms with a few illustrations that are amateurely doodled. Thereโs a decent story about a woman seeking power after being sexually assaulted, but I found it hard to connect with the character due to the abstraction. Youโre primarily watching this for its artistic visuals anyway. I was waiting to be impressed, but this felt more like one of those childrenโs drawings where you feel compelled to give praise for the effort rather than genuine amazement. Still a cool psychedelic animation marking the 70s.
