The Catholic church doesnโ€™t like the spotlight.

Presentation:

When you think of an Oscar for best picture, what film comes to mind? How about a legal journalism drama? Spotlight is the compelling real story of a church coverup and the journalism team behind unraveling it. As it takes place in Boston, this hit pretty close to home. The presentation is straightforward - calling it basic would be generous. The music is generic, no outstanding cinematography or lighting, the performances arenโ€™t even that special save for one scene with Ruffalo. Its merit entirely rests on its script and story. And itโ€™s quite fascinating just like how the journalism panned out in reality.

Conclusion:

This is a good film that makes you aware of a corruption in the Catholic Church, but is it really best picture worthy? 2015 wasnโ€™t that weak of a year, we had Sicario after all. At times this feels like an episode of Law and Order, albeit a very good episode. Slightly disappointing but a legal drama that will absorb you nevertheless, watch this for the story not because the Academy Awards tells you to.
