Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972)

Jungle adventure, or documentary?

Presentation:

If you liked Fitzcarraldo, you will probably like this film, Werner Herzog’s most respected film. I however, did not, meaning I didn’t like this film either. Both films are quite similar being incredible jungle adventures about colonialism except this one is even denser to follow. The vistas are perhaps more impressive but the story is much more historical in Herzog’s documentary style.

Conclusion:

Herzog’s films just don’t speak to me at all. I like his documentaries, but I don’t like how he has this same approach to his feature films. The cinematography is quite unbelievable but moreso how he managed to convince hundreds of actors to actually climb up and down the mountains in the jungle. And I thought Sorcerer was impressive. Truly incredible commitment.
