The Novice (2021)

Varsity rowing giving me Whiplash.

Presentation:

For those that loved Whiplash, they’re aren’t that many similar obsession/ambition films. The Novice attempts to tackle the genre, or perhaps plagiarize it, but even though both are indie films, this one doesn’t feel nearly as professional. The lighting, dimness and cinematography are all indicative of a commercial DP, with creative abstract moments and editing appropriate for social media reels. Throw in a script written from the point of few of a college freshman and you have the female grad’s version of Whiplash.

Conclusion

I don’t think this film is as bad as reviews say, but it doesn’t hold a candle to Damien Chazelle’s masterpiece. Being so similar, it’s hard not to draw comparisons. If you’re into feminist movies especially recent graduates, this could also be a compelling low budget film to relate to.
