Those that don’t like ballet, just haven’t put on red shoes!

Presentation:

I don’t like musicals, nor am I particularly fond of ballet. This is the first time I felt excited watching dance in cinema, regardless of storytelling. The core of this film is ballet, and where other films might glaze over the performance, it becomes the main entree for this movie. It’s beautifully choreographed and rich with color, made possible by casting an actress who actually knows how to dance. That performance alone was worth the price of admission, and had the movie cut there it would have still been a fine film. But just because it can, it provides even more story, and a very novel take on the classic romance paradigm. The music is not bad either, though largely referencing Chopin and other classical works. Whether you are more inclined toward music, dance, or direction, there’s an avenue any viewer can relate with.

Conclusion:

I don’t know if this has converted me into a ballet lover, but I certainly enjoyed it more than any other musical or choreography, up there with West Side Story. I think because the focus is more on music and conflict it was easier to connect with. And if someone like me loved it, I can’t imagine how those that actually likes the genre will feel. What makes me unable to stop thinking about it is the fantastic story. The character’s are charismatic, antagonist charming, everyone including the side characters are developed and physically talented. This film has everything and lacks nothing! Before you fully check out of musicals and dance, put on these red shoes first!
