The Holdovers (2023)
Christmas nostalgia for even the coldest Grinches.
Presentation:
It’s always surprising when a holiday movie moves me. I’m usually detached from family and romantic films, a Grinch one would say, but this film got me in the holiday spirit. I think the marketing of this film is misleading. When it came out it was known for it’s vintage approach of reviving the style of nostalgic films using vintage microphones, lighting and film emulation. But what I think it actually should be marketed as is being a very good Christmas movie. Paul Giamatti is perfect, Dominic Sessa is a convincing rebellious teenager and Randolph is also a secondary character with a bit of heart. The cinematography never distracts you from the story and relationships between its characters.
Conclusion:
I had a few laughs and really found myself in great spirits while watching this when there isn’t a Christmas tree in sight. It’s not a perfect movie with some details a bit forced but for someone as cynical as me I found it perfect. Don’t skip over The Holdovers this holiday season.
