Troy (2004)
Trojan horse of 2000s nostalgic cinema.
Presentation:
As Nolan works on his upcoming Iliad film, it reminds us that sword and sandal Ancient Greek films are a relic of the 2000s. They don’t make blockbusters like these anymore relying on star power and scale to create a cinematic hit. The fight scenes in this film are the most fantastic parts and made me remember this film over others films like Gladiator, Braveheart or 300. Sure, it’s not as stylish or exciting as the others, but it deserves more recognition.
Conclusion:
It shocks me to learn that this film wasn’t well received. Some films leave a lasting impression on you if for no other reason than the age you watched it. As a teenager I was blown away by Brad Pitt’s charisma. Maybe I’m blinded by nostalgia because I can’t explain why I feel it’s awesome. Compared to movies back then it might not be as flashy, but at a distant future this is the film the left the most lasting impression on me.
