Epic gladiator blockbuster teaches the bible.

Presentation:

Although the film references Jesus Christ, I think atheists will still be able to enjoy this film for its story, which is at its core one of revenge. As this film is intended for commercial success, they made the plot and dialogue digestible so that it should even be watchable for young cinephiles in 2026. The super Panavision spectacle in this film is epic with hundreds of people on screen with immersive locations, sets and costumes. With its high quality restoration, there is a gladiator chariot scene that is more impressive than films today especially, perhaps even Gladiator, which was clearly influenced by this film. The story is entertaining, but is it entertaining enough for a nearly 4 hour movie?

Conclusion:

When I think of a movie that is 3hours and 30 minutes long, I subconsciously evaluate whether it was worth it to watch this film or two other ones. We all have busy schedules and not a lot of time in 2026, but I think for contemporary cinephiles, this could just be worth it. Being a commercial blockbuster for 1959, it wonโ€™t carry the same philosophical weight as other films from its time, but makes up for it in spades with its long lasting cinematography.
