The Invisible Guest (2016)

Would rather watch Scooby Doo.

Presentation:

I did not like this movie. The lighting is unnatural and the visual sensibilities remind me of a Spanish soap drama. The grade is desaturated or grey attempting to resemble a modern thriller noir, but it really boils down to a whodunit murder mystery. The acting is pretty weak and the story just makes no sense will more plot holes than swiss cheese. Considering I donโ€™t waste my time watching random movies much this might be one worst movies Iโ€™ve seen all year.

Story:

There are so many things wrong with this film, where do I begin? The whole cause of conflict makes no sense. If you didnโ€™t kill the boy let alone even trade paint, then you have nothing to hide. Why dump the body? You tried to cover up a crime that you didnโ€™t cause. Even if the reasoning is to not contact police for fear of revealing your affair, that doesnโ€™t mean you should dump a body, which is a massive overreaction and unnecessary coverup! Yes, they should have just driven off were that the case, but as the car is broken, just call a tow truck and hide in the woods. But even if you can forgive the shaky premise, the acting is so bad that itโ€™s really hard to care. The guy is expressionless for the sake of ambiguity, which obviously means he will be the bad guy by the end. The first twist is so unbelievable, that the women would have orchestrated this seeing how the man has infinitely more resources, motivation and capacity to commit this crime. Itโ€™s the equivalent of a grown man saying a petite girl assaulted and took advantage of him. The only reason we could entertain this idea is because we are shown cinematic flashbacks of it, so obviously the wife is able to deduce the lie immediately. But that doesnโ€™t mean she could so easily infiltrate and elicit his confession in this manner. The way it ends up being revealed is so childishly conceived, convoluted and impractical.

Conclusion:

You may enjoy this film as mindless shock slop but if you watched any decent mystery thriller before, this one will be frustratingly bad. It makes other mysteries like Knives Out look like a masterpiece, which maybe it is for you and you may like this film. But if you prefer mysteries with coherence then this film might be a waste of time.
