Scarface (1983)
Shakespearean downfall of a charismatic drug lord.
Presentation:
Al Pacino gives a performance of a lifetime completely inhabiting the persona of a Cuban immigrant trying to make a name for himself. His accent and persuasive mannerisms allow him to completely transform into a believable criminal oozing with charisma no matter how extreme or ridiculous his actions are. Although many gangster films convey the inevitable downfall of the protagonist, this film feels different delving into the deep subconscious of what allowed the psychotic ruthlessness to manifest. For this reason, there is an epic Shakespearean quality to this riveting tragic hero that is as glorious as a burning plane crash.
Conclusion:
A more drama focused story with plenty of action to complement, Scarface is a true gem of the gangster genre. I think it has more lasting impact than Goodfellas which naturally draws many comparisons for the most popular gangster flick, but because The Godfather does psychological aspects better, I think doesnโt distinguish itself enough to take the crown. But Al Pacino does claim the award for the crime lord with the most personality balancing over the top violence and serious drama. A truly tragic hero delivering a profound cautionary tale of ambition.
