Training Day (2001)

Presentation:
Imagine Sicario meets GTA, that is what Training Day is. The film starts off somewhat mysteriously with massive subversive undertones that likely laid the foundation of Sicario. I wouldn’t say the film holds all the way through, which stops this from being at the level of the Villeneuve’s masterpiece. But make no mistake, this is one of the most underrated gangster cop thrillers in memory. Denzel Washington, while cartoonishly over the top, is electric, and Ethan Hawke holds his own as the rookie. It’s not common that a film from the past can excite me so today, but Training Day managed to do just that.
Conclusion:
Although there aren’t specific memorable scenes trendy enough for today’s highlight reels, the entire film is a memorable experience. Seeing Snoop Dogg, Eva Mendes and the actor who plays Tuco in Breaking Bad were also such great treats in this incredible casting. It doesn’t exactly stick the ending, but I still was disappointed by the simplistic ending. This is a hidden gem you definitely don’t want to miss if you are a fan of subversive crime films.
