The Revenant (2015)
A chilling experience bringing the best from Lubezki.
Presentation:
DiCaprio finallys pulls off an oscar win, managing to make you really feel every ounce of pain with the help of beautiful cinematography from Chivo. In typical Lubezki fashion we have clean handheld closeup low angled wide shots in beautiful natural light. It's so unique to see a story told like this and you get up close and personal to the characters. The imitacy makes you feel just as cold, but unfortunately the story feels the same way.
Conclusion:
The story is well told and there are some sequences that are just so well done, included the animal scenes. Tom Hardy really does manage the steal the spotlight and has such unbelievable presence in everything he's in. Although I enjoyed the points of conflict, it can definitely feel predictable and one-dimensional. A visual stunner, Chivo's style really complements the story here allowing for one of the more visceral experiences in cinema.
