Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
The polyamorous fantasy.
Presentation:
The characters are perfectly cast in this film. Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz are irresistibly sexy and alluring. Meanwhile Scarlett Johansson and Rebeca Hall in juxtaposition seem so incredibly basic and touristy. Although this is one of the more loosely organized Woody Allen scripts, it somehow captures a real feeling through this love triangle. Something familiar, longing, but also out of reach. I think many females could feel drawn to this idea of escape from their suburban or dull urban chatter for this Spanish fantasy. But like a chocolate tart, this love cannot last and should be enjoyed in doses.
Conclusion:
I personally enjoyed this one despite not being a very strong cohesive story. But if you view this film more as an emotional snapshot, then I think you will enjoy it as much as me. Say what you want about Woody Allen, he knows how to vibe and proves he can tell a story that doesnโt involve being obsessed with himself.
