Pixar films do have soul after all.
Presentation:
This film has been touted as one of the best Pixar films of all time. I can see why this argument was made because it does have a genuinely deep message about purpose and existentialism. Although the majority of the movie goes by pretty quickly to retain attention for children, there are moments of profound stillness here and there that do capture the beauty of life in a surprising way. The movie looks nice, well lit with HDR and bright colors that make NYC not look like a concrete jungle. I think Joeโs character arc is well done but 22 is a bit undeveloped and jumps all over the place. Overall I feel some important developments were rushed for the sake of retention editing, but it still manages to hit you in the feels.
Conclusion:
I donโt think this is a masterpiece, but it is a good film even for the skeptics that have heard this is the best Pixar film of all time. Compared to live action films it wonโt be as deep, but for a Disney film itโs surprisingly substantial and doesnโt call for any serious criticism. I think itโs more geared toward adults than children as well and there wasnโt a moment I lost interest, even durning the silly jokes and mannerisms directed at children. Itโs also free from any social commentary youโd expect from modern Disney. A genuinely good Pixar film that can feel disjointed but is definitely worthwhile and does have some soul.
