Food (1992)
Iโll never look at food the same way again.
Presentation:
Svankmajer is the most deserving artist to enter the Hall of Spice because the other artists often fall into the category of being inaccessible to anyone but the filmmaker. The Czech master does have artistic posturing, but itโs not the meaningless abstraction like many other offenders. The aesthetics are pure and speak for themselves so he never needs to insist upon his artistry like the Andy Worhols of cinema. Food is perhaps his second greatest project incorporating real people into his stop motion, blurring the distinction between human and claymation. The imagery is perhaps more memorable as a result of the grotesque imagery.
Conclusion:
This is also a contender for his signature piece, though you should definitely watch Dimensions of Dialogue before this one. At 17 minutes, this film covers breakfast, lunch and dinner to make sure you will finish satisfied. All of those avant garde shorts you see today on Instagram, likely harken back to this one.
