Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)
Donโt really wanna be a sicario anymore.
Presentation:
This film looks nowhere near as good as the original 2015 Sicario by Villeneuve and Deakins. You have a new director and direction that has a completely different tone. It's doesn't look bad, itโs just too big of a departure from the original masterpiece. When watching this film, you may have a few double takes as to whether this is a sequel or prequel to the original. The film is not nearly as subversive as there is no specific threat this time leading to a feeling of swinging through the darkness. Benicio Del Toro is consistent but Josh Brolin has no presence. The girl and boy are supposed to be ambiguous, but I didn't really care for them at all. The script is also quite a mess, opting to not build upon the internal moral struggles of the original and instead giving you a pinball of dramatized turn of events. This will make you appreciate the original director and cinematographer even more.
Conclusion:
The film tries to set up for a sequel, but you have to make this one good enough for audiences to even consider watching it. The franchise seems destined to be reduced to a popcorn thriller.
