The Graduate (1967)
Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me!
Presentation:
They don’t make romcoms like the classics used to. I am definitely not one to go out of my way to watch a romantic comedy especially older ones, so I think I can confidently say that The Graduate is a great classic. The satirical premise is delightfully absurd but always in a fun way as to blur the lines between slapstick comedy and timeless classic. Dustin Hoffman is not exactly believable as a recent graduate, but I still loved the cast. The soundtrack is also iconic with many familiar tunes you’d only recognize today from reels. The laugh out loud moments are hearty and what’s more, the cinematography and story hit it out of the park.
Conclusion:
This film is NSFW and caught me off guard as I normally would not expect explicit raunchiness from a film from this era. The hallmark of any good romance film for me is it sweeps me away and makes me want to fall in love. And this film, as unserious as it takes itself, still did that for me. When a popcorn romcom transcends into timeless classic.
