Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

Gothic yet innocent, one of Tim Burton's best in years.

Presentation:

It should be no surprise as a Burton film that you will get gothic victorian visuals and costumes. The cast is youthful and convincingly precocious. You have a wonderfully quirky cast and the beautiful Eva Green really feels like perfect matriarch to look up to. Given the children and naive nature of the cast, you'd expect the film to be predictable with no risk, but this film defies those cliches. Although it feels like a PG movie, you have some dark moments and you'll be pleasantly surprised by where it leads you. The romance was sweet and the conflict never felt too childish as there really felt like there was something at stake.

Conclusion:

Gothic enjoyers should enjoy this, but it may be mainstream enough for casual viewers outside the genre to enjoy as well. A good introduction to Tim Burton's style.
