Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016)
Gothic yet innocent, one of Tim Burton's best in years.
Presentation:
It should be no surprise as a Burton film that you will get gothic victorian visuals and costumes. The cast is youthful and convincingly precocious. You have a wonderfully quirky cast and the beautiful Eva Green really feels like the matriarch to look up to.
Story:
Given the children and naive nature of the cast, you'd expect the film to be predictable with no risk, but this film defies those cliches. Although it feels like a PG movie, you have some truly dark moments and you'll be pleasantly surprised by where it leads you. Time travel in a cave might be a bit be getting too familiar. The romance was sweet and the conflict never felt too childish as there really felt like there was something at stake.
Conclusion:
Gothic enjoyers should enjoy this, but it may be mainstream enough for casual viewers outside the genre to enjoy as well. A good introduction to Tim Burton's style.
