Diamonds are not your best friend.
Presentation:
One of the better blockbusters with strong performances from Djimon Hounsou and DiCaprio. They have a unique chemistry where they are rather discordant with a tinge of brotherly connection. DiCaprio has an interesting accent which improves over time, Hounsou complete inhabits a desperate father looking for his son. The story is quite gripping from beginning to end and well paced. The main critique is throughout the movie it turns into an action film for broad appeal, which may or may not mesh with the final message. It can be considered a popcorn flick at times with solid emotional foundation, a hallmark of 2000s cinema.
Conclusion:
Although Africa seems to have the worst problems, the international community doesn’t seem to care with media forcing us to care about other political territories. Perhaps it is also because Africa has mostly internal problems. Nevertheless the film accurately depicts how the news simply doesn’t care about the bloodshed in Africa. The film succeeds in making us reevaluate, though the anti-consumerist and ethical resourcing is slightly disjointed by a blockbuster clearly designed to have mass appeal. In any case, the film itself is good though unrealistically dramatic at times for the sake of conflict. This doesn’t detract from the impact of the film, rather weakens the persuasion to our resolve in order to act.
