Predestination (2014)
Sci-fi paradox with a twist.
Presentation:
Very interesting premise in 2014. In 2024, this plot device might be a slightly beaten down path. The twists are fun and exciting and told in a well structured way.
Story:
The film utilizes a lot of makeup to tell this story. The believability of the make up will largely determine your experience. For me, it all felt very confusing, what happened to these characters when it should have been, who are these people? But if you can't see the resemblances from the get-go, you might find the twist very exciting. I don't think the film takes itself too seriously and avoids any political commentary, it's simply a fun sci-fi time paradox story, something that Denis Villeneuve would have loved to navigate with Incendies.
Conclusion:
An above average sci-fi film. The premise is wild but still a lot of fun and adds new elements to the overdone time paradox genre, when in 2024 we have moved on to multiverses.
