28 Days Later (2002)
The core essence of a zombie film.
Presentation:
When you think of zombie films, there are many icons that come to mind but this film encapsulates everything that makes a zombie film great. The grungy, punk and dark aesthetic. The depravity of humanity. The frailty of society. The scavenging, desperation, immorality and conspiracy. We are introduced to fast zombies, which are much more terrifying and formidable than the slow versions. The film is gritty and the cinematography is quite impressive with interesting camera angles and use of handheld. The mood is aptly contrasty for the themes it portrays.
Conclusion:
This is everything a zombie film should be. It’s one of Alex Garland’s finest scripts and though you may not be impressed with his work now, you should still be excited for what comes in the upcoming 28 Years Later, hopefully providing a satisfying conclusion to the 28 later epic trilogy.
