Rounders (1998)
Good Will Hunting the poker grifter.
Presentation:
Probably the most realistic depiction of poker grifting and hustling in modern times. Matt Damon, Edward Norton and John Malkovich make for a crazy cast to allow us to experience real poker playing in a commercial format. The poker strategy is basic but solid, and the environment is grounded in a very Good Will Hunting-like manner. This is quite nostalgic in that poker never looked the same after the revolution of online tournaments and GTO solvers. This is what real poker players think back fondly on. Itโs not a sensational script, but the poker is done justice.
Conclusion:
Despite being one of the more cinematic and sexy sports, there really arenโt than many poker movies. Rounders might be one of the only dedicated poker movies with real card playing that allows you to satisfy your fill. This film will always be overshadowed by 21, but who cares about blackjack! Poker is where itโs at, and for hardcore poker enthusiasts this is a must watch, especially if you follow stories of poker legends like Daniel Negreanu. Sure itโs not winning any awards for its writing, but thatโs because the hero is poker above all else. Itโs faithful to poker and the lifestyle of their hustle and as close as you can get to that world from the comforts of your home.
