Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
There’s more under the hood of the Mad Max universe.
Presentation:
Despite the film being around 90% CGI, it actually fits the world. The visuals are proudly unrealistic and the grade is heavy handed in presenting a fun fantasy universe that doesn’t take itself too seriously. What's fantastic about this one is there is a meaningful story following a character that were do feel emotionally invested in. Certain action sequences toward the later half surprisingly deliver a very fun experience despite the wonky computer generated graphics and choppy frame rate, which do make sense for this fantasy adventure. There’s a certain point where the tone of the film changes to be more serious, but I actually enjoyed how it becomes more thriller in tone. It is long, but does end up having the scope to be an epic. I personally found this film to be better and more memorable than the first Mad Max: Fury Road, which although has more practical effects and real shots, had a zanier and forgettable narrative. Chris Hemsworth transforms into a serious villain and Anya Taylor-Joy really makes you want to root for her.
Conclusion:
A surprisingly good adventure fantasy action epic that might finally convert you to the Mad Max universe. The garish visuals mislead you into thinking it will be a formulaic and soulless addition to the franchise, but it is actually a substantial sequel that has more under the hood than you bargained for. One of the more notable popcorn movies of 2024.
